Former Glory

[ 0 ] November 2, 2011 |

Sydneysiders have a chance to step back in time to the Razorhurst era and embrace the 6 O’clock swill at Former Glory, a new pop-up bar in Darlinghurst. You’ll find it on level 3 of the East Village Hotel on Liverpool St. Full of history this hotel was once owned by Tilly Devine and Frank ‘The Little Gunman’ Green. Never fear it’s much safer than its former incarnation as a brothel and bloodhouse full of razor carryinggangs, prostitutes and pickpockets.

Paying homage to the 1920’s Sly Grog culture punters can enjoy long necks in brown paper bags. Whilst the twenties in Sydney was popular for it’s beer binging the sale of cocktail implements were also commonplace. The drinks list at Former Glory reflects this with an eclectic collection of cocktails from the era. Try El Diablo (Don Julio blanco tequila, crème de cassis, lime and ginger beer) ($16) or the Blood and Sand (Singleton whisky, cherry brandy, sweet vermouth and orange juice) ($17). One of my favourites was the Ace of Clubs (Zacapa Centenario 23 yo, crème de cacao and lime juice) ($17).

Head Chef Adam Spencer has designed a simple snacking menu drawing inspiration from the foods that would have been popular in Sydney in the twenties. The Tradesmans: underground mutton, rillette cheese, pickles and bread ($16), Potato skins, dips and dollops ($8) and Baked beans, bacon and egg ($12) are all on offer. The Provolone and ham toastie ($12) is also worth a try.

Former Glory is open Thursday-Monday 5pm-midnight
